The ruling concerning attending a wedding celebration in a wedding hall

Question:

My wife’s parents invited me to attend her brother’s wedding celebration; that will be held in a wedding hall, and will contain unveiling [of women], singing and other forbidden things, and I fear –if I don’t go– that they demand me to divorce [my wife] and cancel the rental agreement of the house that I rented from them, so what do you advise me to do? May Allah reward you well.

Answer:

All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds. Peace and blessing be upon whom Allah sent as a mercy to the Worlds, upon his Family, his Companions and his Brothers until the Day of Resurrection.

I have already answered the question about holding the wedding’s banquet in a wedding hall, and you can see the fatwa on the website (1).

As for he who has a fear of the mentioned evil things and knows that they will quite likely happen if he does not accept the invitation, he may arrive before the party’s time prior to their departure to the wedding hall, accompanied by a gift to please the groom, within the limits of his financial capacity.

Yet if this is hardly to be achieved, and his religious position is weakened because of the family pressure, and he is forced to attend the wedding place, then he tries as much as possible to leave at the earliest opportunity, without approving what is in the wedding hall of forbidden things. He also ought to detest what happens in it of musical parties with Satan’s flutes, and what accompanies it of dancing and mixing [with men] and so on. Indeed the one who hates the act of disobedience and condemns the evil deed is considered as absent from it and its sin does not affect him, for his saying صلَّى الله عليه وسلَّم:“If a wrong deed is committed on the earth, then the one who witnessed and hated it (in another version: condemned it) is like who has not witnessed it. Conversely, the one who did not witness that wrong deed but just approved of it, is like who has witnessed it (2).

The perfect knowledge belongs to Allah عزَّ وجلَّ; and our last prayer is all the praises and thanks are to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds, and prayers of Allah are to Muhammad and his Family, Companions and Brothers until the Day of Resurrection.
