The norm determining the permission of using the contraceptive pills

The question:

It is commonly known that the woman during pregnancy undergoes changes that affect badly her behavior and could thus lead to disagreement between her and her husband’s family (because she lives with them in the same house); especially during the first year of her marriage, (there are similar cases which occurred).

So, is it permissible to use the pills in order to prevent pregnancy in the first year of her marriage in order to know her husband’s family and vice versa?

The answer:

All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds. Peace and blessing be upon whom Allah sent as a mercy to the Worlds, upon his Family, his Companions and his Brothers till the Day of Resurrection.

Know that the principle in marriage is to fulfill Allah’s Way with His creatures and universe; it is the way chosen by Allah for the reproduction and the continuity of life. This is stated by Allah’s عزَّ وجلَّ saying:

The meaning of the verse:

And among His Signs is this, that He created for you wives from among yourselves, that you may find repose in them, and He has put between you affection and mercy. Verily, in that are indeed signs for a people who reflect.﴿ [Ar-Rûm (The Romans): 21].

He عزَّ وجلَّ also said when speaking about the Messengers and Prophets whose tradition and guidance should be followed:

The meaning of the verse:

And indeed We sent Messengers before you (O Muhammad صلَّى الله عليه وسلَّم), and made for them wives and offspring.﴿ [Ar-Ra`d (The Thunder): 38].

Allah عزَّ وجلَّ also said when mentioning His Grace He bestowed upon His creatures:

The meaning of the verse:

And Allâh has made for you wives of your own kind, and has made for you, from your wives, sons and grandsons, and has bestowed on you good provision.﴿ [An-Nahl (The Bees): 72].

Moreover, the Prophet صلَّى الله عليه وسلَّم said: “Marry the loving and fertile woman, for I will be proud of your great numbers before the nations on the Day of Resurrection”(1).

Hereupon, one should not refrain from these legislated wisdoms as regards conjugal relationships unless there is a legal proof that a corporal harm touches the wife due to pregnancy or touches the children in general. In such case, it is permissible to use these contraceptives exceptionally from the previously established principle. As for the mentioned reason in the question, it is not correct to except it from the aforesaid rule, and Allah عزَّ وجلَّ knows best.

Allah عزَّ وجلَّ knows best what is true. Our last prayer is all praise is due to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds. Peace and blessing be upon our Prophet صلَّى الله عليه وسلَّم, his Family, his Companions and Brothers till the Day of Resurrection.
