Concerning borrowing from the person
who deposits his money in the bank

Question:

Is it permissible to borrow a sum of money from a man who deposits his money in interest-based banks? May Allah reward you.

Answer:

All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds. Peace and blessing be upon whom Allah sent as a mercy to the Worlds, upon his Family, his Companions and his Brothers until the Day of Resurrection:

If the borrower is in need of money and has no alternative other than the lender’s lawful money which is deposited in the bank without the usury money, and he (the lender) does not stipulate any addition beyond the loan; it is, in this case, permissible to borrow from him with his disapproval of the fact that the lender deposits his money in the interest-based financial institutions. He (the borrower) should advise -if possible- the lender against depositing his money in such institutions, according to his saying صلَّى الله عليه وآله وسلَّم: “None of you [truly] believes until he loves for his brother that which he loves for himself” (1), and his saying صلَّى الله عليه وآله وسلَّم : “Religion is the sincere advice…(2).

The perfect knowledge belongs to Allah عزَّ وجلَّ; and our last prayer is all the praises and thanks are to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds, and prayers of Allah are to Muhammad and his Family, Companions and Brothers until the Day of Resurrection.
