Concerning the limits of dealing with companies that have prohibited activities

Question:

We heard about the Sheikh’s -may Allah protect him- statement concerning a company that trifles with the Islamic values, keeping in mind that this company has a group of factories and services and suchlike. Does the Sheikh’s statement concern all the services of the company? Benefit us, may Allah reward you.

Answer:

All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds. Peace and blessing be upon whom Allah sent as a mercy to the Worlds, upon his Family, his Companions and his Brothers until the Day of Resurrection:

Know that the Islamic Nation has agreed on denying evil actions and not approving of corrupting and corruption as much as one can afford, according to His saying

The meaning of the verse:

You are the best of peoples ever raised up for mankind; you enjoin Al-Ma‘rûf (good) and forbid Al-Munkar (evil)﴿ [Âl ‘Imrân: 110]. And His saying

The meaning of the verse:

And the believers, men and women are Awliyâ’  (supporters, protectors) of one another; they enjoin Al-Ma‘rûf (good) and forbid Al-Munkar (evil) ﴿ [At-Tawba: 71]. And his saying صَلَّى اللهُ عليه وآله وسَلَّم: “Whoever amongst you sees an evil action let him change it with his hand, if he cannot then with his tongue, and if he cannot then with his heart and that is the weakest of faith” (1).

Accordingly, the business activity of any company whose work is allowed and yet it was known through the declaration of its owners as well as the propaganda of its leaders, that it helps nourishing corruption and supports its paths as well as abolishing the Islamic values from the society and replacing them with corruption; if other similar companies take part in the same kind of its permissible activity, then it is an obligation to express one’s denial of the evil action by abandoning it as much as possible. But, if the kind of the company’s activity is unique in the market and there is an insisting need for it, then there is no matter to deal with it according to one’s needs because: “Need is judged as necessity, be it public or private”, and needs are like necessities, they are estimated according to their degrees; with a hearty denial which is considered as one of the individual dutiesthat are incumbent on the Muslim and cannot be exempted from it in any case, together with the non-approval of the wrong deed.

Nevertheless, it is not forbidden to work in such companies that cooperate with the State in the construction of factories, residential areas and suchlike, provided that they are originally permissible; because, if the developmental projects of the State do not dispense with dealing with usury banks -in general cases- it is notwithstanding permissible to work -by necessity- in those factories, administrative and educational institutions and suchlike following to the rule concerning the case of need previously mentioned. Therefore, it is, a fortiori, permissible to work in other factories and institutions.

The perfect knowledge belongs to Allah عزَّ وجلَّ; and our last prayer is all the praises and thanks are to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds, and prayers of Allah are to Muhammad and his Family, Companions and Brothers until the Day of Resurrection.
